T.W. Hunter Middle School provides sixth, seventh, and eight grade students with class time for math, science, language arts, social studies, and related arts. In order to challenge high-achieving students, accelerated courses are offered in math and language arts for the seventh and eighth grade students. In related arts classes, students have nine weeks of computer skills, fundamentals of technology, teen living, art, music, and health and physical education. Students may also choose to take band or chorus. In order to meet the needs of every member of the school population, T.W. Hunter Middle School provides: special education services as determined by Individualized Education Plans (IEP) designed for each participant through Comprehensive Development Classes, Extended Resource Classes, Pull-out Resource class, inclusion in the general education classroom setting, and a behavior modification class; a state-mandated program through which the certified intellectually gifted population (nine percent of the school population) is served; an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher meets with our ESL students on a weekly basis; CARE team services for at-risk students requiring guidance in the areas of behavior, academics, self-esteem or relationships; tutoring for students who request extra help before and after school; nutritious meals for all students (7.9 percent of our population participates in the federally funded free and reduced lunch program); clubs including the Buccaneers Against Drugs (B.A.D.) and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (F.C.A.) which are open to all students; community service opportunities through various clubs and other organizations; organizations including the National Junior Beta Club, the Serteen Club, the Student Council, the Math Competition Team, and the Yearbook staff are for students meeting specific requirements; Character Corp is a group of student representatives that plan and implement Character education programs and activities throughout the school year. |
