Student Acceptable Usage Policy

Internet Acceptable Usage Policy

Sumner County School District is providing your child with an opportunity to participate in the world's largest computer network, the Internet. It is important for our children to become familiar with accessing information electronically. The intent of this document is to give an overview of user responsibility, acceptable and unacceptable use of the resources without listing all such responsibilities, uses and misuses.

It is important that you understand this access is a privilege--not a right. This privilege, like most others, carries with it responsibility. The Internet contains all kinds of information. The vast majority of it will help your student learn more. Some of it is inappropriate for children.

The Sumner County School District requires the instructional staff to blend thoughtful use of the Internet throughout the curriculum and to provide educationally relevant objectives, instruction, guidance, and supervision of students in its use.

While school personnel are charged with the responsibility of guiding your student to the appropriate educational information, it may be possible for him/her to access inappropriate material. Your student is charged with the responsibility of not deliberately looking for this material.

The State of Tennessee currently had in place software to block objectionable Internet sites. However, this software cannot block all such sites. The burden of responsibility must lie with the internet user in not seeking such sites and in immediately leaving objectionable sites if they are encountered accidentally.

Sharing computer access with others requires that your student be polite and do what is right. Electronic files accessed through district-provided Internet services are subject to review by administrators and faculty to maintain system integrity and ensure that users are acting responsibly.

Before you sign this agreement, you should understand that user privileges will be lost and disciplinary action can be taken at school for inappropriate use of the Internet. You, as the parent or legal guardian, can be held legally liable for any problems that occur due to your student's inappropriate use of the Internet.

Inappropriate Uses and Practices

The following practices are considered unacceptable, and result in the loss of district provided access to the Internet. Additional disciplinary action may be determined at the building level in keeping with existing procedures and practices regarding inappropriate language or behavior. When and where applicable, law enforcement agencies may be involved.

The Sumner County School System will report any illegal activities to appropriate authorities.
